Mask Project
Socialized at Birth
As we interact with our family and media, you are taught to be masculine if you are a boy and to be feminine if you are a girl. In other words to be socialized, which begins at birth. We are socialized into different social groups by society. These groups are Targets and Agents. Agents are, Men, White, Middle-upper class people, Abled people, Middle aged and Heterosexual. Targets include Women, racially Oppress groups, gay and lesbian, disabled people. We are socialized into different social groups but these groups are also determined by the environment we are raised in. For example if an middle or upper class family raises a boy and this has no disability and is white, he will fall into the category of agents, it`s not like he choose this but he can choose if he want to stay an agent as he becomes an adult or to become a target. These have been the dividing forces in are society for so long that to brake theses social standards is nearly imposable. I have been socialized by society and my exposure to the media to be athletic, to not show weakness and to be as masculine as possible, but i have also been socialized by my family, to be self conscious of other people and sense I am white I have access to white privilege which will also determine what group I am placed into, target or agent.
Most white people would agree that racism is very non existent but that is the white point of view, what about the view from colored people? In the video ‘‘The-R-word’‘ it talk about how racism exist in are society. The video it showed a group of black people and a group of white people in separate rooms talking about race. The group of whites though that racism was 50 to 75 percent non existent in are society but the blacks though that racism was only 7 to negative 20 percent non existent in are society. That is a big difference of the opinion of race. What is making such a big deference in opinion on the views of race? I think what creates such a big difference in the opinion of race is that white people have white privilege. White privilege, as describe in the article unpacking the invisible knapsack by peggy McIntosh, ‘’White privilege is an invisible knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes tools and blank checks’’. And sense people of color don`t get any of these privileges to the extent as whites, this is what I think is creates the big difference in the opinion of race. In society a person of colorer is more likely to be questioned of the street then a white person. That would give me a similar point of view as a person of color. In the video ‘‘Black men ski’‘ the singer Stew goes to aspen on a ski trip and while on this trip Stew feels out of place and alone, most likely because he is one of few colored men there. But why was there so few colored men there? Why is it that people of color are not as socially excepted at ski areas? When i go skiing and get on a ski lift i don`t really think about what race the person siting next to me is. In my family I was socialized to treat every person the same no matter what race they are so why can`t every one be excepting of every one in society? Is it really that hard?
In our society when a person breaks the social norm of their gender it is meet with miss understanding and aggression. In the video ‘’My Princes Boy’‘, a video about a boy who is 4 years old and likes to wear girl clothes, and do boy like things. In the video the boy Dyson loves to wear dresses. In the video Dyson says that the reason he wears dresses is because, as Dyson says in the video ‘’It makes him happy’’. Unfortunately Dyson`s love of dressing up was originally meet resistance from other people and his family at first. As Dyson began to show that it made him happy to wear dresses his family started to support him in his love of dresses. Because of Dyson`s love for dresses he was originally ostracized from his family. Also in another video clip a Call to Men, with Tony Porter discuses the subject of ‘‘The Man Box’‘. ‘’The Man Box’’ is an imaginary box filled with every thing it means to be a man, like DO NOT CRY, BE STRONG AND TOUGH, DO NOT SHOW WEAKNESS and so fourth. In most instants when any man brakes theses social norm for men, they are ostracized from most social groups of men and sometimes even there family. For instance if I were to act more girl like and not like sports, I would not be as excepted in male peer groups or even completely rejected. But why must this happen, some men aren`t in to sports but academics or in braces more of a the feminine side of life, or have more of a medium like cleaning and staying home and still doing things associated with men, like sports or hard brut labor. In my family I do part of the cleaning and what ever I can do to help but I am still athletic and I am still excepted into peer groups.
Also when every person is born they began to be socialized by there family, friends and teachers as well as anyone that they become attached to. It`s theses people that will influence you in joining a social group, Target or agent. Also it says in the article Cycles of Socialization by Bobbie Harro, ‘‘when you are born you began to be socialized’’. But to add to that your social groups changes as you get older and what defines you as an agent or target changes, wether it`s income, age, how you view gender or ability/disability. For example if you lose your job or you win the lottery, this could change what you are seen as, target or agent. When you become excepted into a social group like agent or target you become socialized to dislike each other to certain degree, but what I fail to understand is why we categorizes are social group in that one is better then the other to a certain degree even if they don`t realizes it or even if they do? And why must society pace a value on your social status? For example in are society we value a person with a high paying job or an individual of influence in society, in other words agents. Another question is, can we brake the social norms that have such a negative affect on society? In my family we value hard work from each other and I also except that other work hard and deserve the income they work for.
In our society we have social standards that divided us, yet how can we brake these standards? I think to break these social standards you need to analyze how you view others in society both above and below us wether it`s gender, race or class and try to help your self and others find equality or at least start to realizing how alike we our in society no matter what barriers we think divid us. But how can we do this when no one tries. The hardiest part is for society to take the first step towards equality between races and genders.
On my mask I panted it half black and half white to show how my socialization has change as I have moved to Durango. Black being when i lived more like average kid growing up and white being how my socialization was changed when I became homeschooled and when i moved to Durango. I use the cut out words from this essay to show how I put my own socialization into the mask.
- My Mask Project Reflection
- 1. What are you most proud of about your mask? Why?
- Quote: Quote the section of your essay that you are most proud of and describe, in detail, why you are proud of it.
3.Biggest take-away:What will you remember from this project? why?
The biggest take away was the creative art work that was done on the masks and the refinement and evidence that was put into the essay. With me i find it amazing the amount of hard work that every one puts into each pice of work that they had.
4.Habit of heart and mind:which habit of heart and mind do you need work on in your next project to get better at project based learning?why do you need to improve and how that habit of heart of mind will help you.
I need to work on my evidence and refinement for al of my projects because those seem to be the hardiest one is for me to do. I think that finding evidence and refining it will help me get better wording into my essays. I hope to improve my evidence and refinement so as to get more progress on all of me projects.

Doomed By Fate
Prologue
(Scene opens in a humid cocoa farm in a jungle area on the Ivory Coast, Mastapha a young boy who has worked on the farm for several years as a slave, He is carrying a large bag of cocoa pods, he is are being watched by the Owner of the farm)
Owner: Work faster, you!
Masapha: I can`t keep going like this! I need a break.
Owner: NO you don`t, we need to fill our quota. The world demands cheap cocoa and you are going to give to them.
(Mastapha knows there is nothing he can do so he keeps on walking)
Chorus:(as Mastaphas conscience)
Don't give up Mastapha,
you will survive,
the cruelty of your master,
the beating and the hard work,
even though you have lost everything,
your life and family,
you will survive.
Scene One
(Late that night Mastapha goes to bed on his old broad that he sleeps on, his master had beaten him for falling to fill his quota of the day, he is losing his drive to live, but he hears a glimmer of hope as a reporter from America confronts his master about using slaves on the cocoa farm)
Reporter: How can you use these kids like this, working all day, they have no life.
Master: (Taking a breath to respond to the reporter, but the reporter cuts him off)
Reporter: There is no way I am going to let this go unnoticed. How can you abuse theses kids like this?
Master: You know nothing about what you are accusing me of, the rest of the world doesn't know, only you know and only you care.
Reporter: Others need to know about this, I will show them the cruelty that you subject this kids through, and expose your use of child labor to the same companies you sell your cocoa to, once they know, you will have to give up the use of child labor to maintain this farm if you want to sell any more cocoa.
Chorus: (as Mastapha`s conscience)
your salvation is here,
just hold on,
just wait,
your salvation is here
Scene Two
(Mastapha found the reporter 2 days later hiding on the cocoa farm, he is trying to smuggle kids off the cocoa farm, the reporter is talking to Mastapha, they are in the middle of the jungle cocoa farm, Mastapha is trying to find out what the is doing here reporter)
Mastapha: What are your doing here?
Reporter: I've come to get as many of you kids off this farm as quickly as possible and show you to the world to maybe get the word out about child labor on theses cocoa farms.
Mastapha: I hope you are successful for my sake, the slaves here are beaten harshly and sometimes our master forgets to feed us. I would do anything to get out of this place, is there something I can do to help you?
Reporter: I hope so to, and yes there is something you can do. I need you to bring them all here tonight, I have a van waiting nearby to get all of us out of here.
Mastapha: Ok I will try my best, but why are you doing this?
Reporter: Because I find child labor appalling and people need to know about it, so they have the information about what they are buying and hopefully convince them to not buy the chocolate that is made from cocoa farms that uses child labor.
(A few hours later the children gathered at the van the reporter brought)
(Mastapha calls out to the trying to find the reporter) Hello…..?
Owner: Hello Mastapha I`ve been expecting you.
(The Owner steps out from behind the van)
Mastaph: What ...what are you doing here?
(Mastapha looks down and answers his own question as he see the reporter laying face down in his own blood)
Mastapha: ….W...why…..
Owner: You see I know that the reporter was here and trying to remove you all from my service so I took care of him and now for all of you trying to escape I will make an example of you to keep further obedience of my slaves.
(The Owner smiles in a devilish way, like he is enjoying what he is about to do, and pulls a gun out and fires, Mastapha`s feels a searing pain in the middle of his head for only an instant and then his world fades to black as he falls to the ground dead)
Chorus: (as Mastapha`s conscience)
Your chance of life has been striped away,
you were doomed to this life from birth,
to work as a slave,
as a labor on this farm,
to fill the wants of others,
there desire for cheap cocoa has turn you into a slave,
you tried and failed to escape,
you were doomed from the beginning,
as well as many others,
but only the lucky escape,
while the others live a life under the cruelty of their master
you should be thankful you made this far,
you tried to make a life for your self,
by escaping and finding peace in this world,
but you were doomed by fate.

Greek Tragedy Reflection
In this project I feel that the one thing that I am proud of in this project was the scrip that I wrote to go with my graphic novel. The script is what I think I put the most work into and tried to refine most. This was also the first play I have written so it I was a little in the dark in the beginning but I think I did an ok job in the end. During this project I felt that the biggest problem I had has was the visual component. I had a lot of trouble with the creation of my graphic novel. Mostly the problems were the software I was using. I had a lot of trouble I think because I didn`t really know that much about graphic novels and how to make them, but I over came it with time and through the help of class mates and teachers. It was also a bit frustrating when I had to restart my entire graphic and it was even more frustrating when I couldn`t upload it to were it need to go. But I do think that if I ever have to do this project again I would, but I would do the visual component as a stop animation video instead and really try to put me effort into the dialogue between the charters in my play. Even with all my mistakes and set backs during this project I am still proud of the work I`ve done and would do it again given half the chance because even thought it was hard I still enjoyed it.

Happiness and meaning project
Project Description
This project was about how happiness and meaning play role in our lives. Many parts of happiness we studied during the process. For example dopamine and how it reacts to our brain, community, meaning in life and how finding your passion can lead you towards happiness. This project also covered a lot about meanings and how they play in finding happiness. And how we can find happiness as an individuals.

Are You Happy?
Happiness. Happiness is something we should all strive for, but why is it important? How do we know if we are happy? I can’t answer all of this for you, but I can tell you this, you should always strive to find happiness, it will help you become more relaxed rather then stressed and make each day more enjoyable. I regrettably can`t tell you if your happy or not but I can tell you how to achieve happiness in the following paper. To achieve personal happiness in the 21st century you must obtain social acceptance and find your flow, while insuring that you unearth your passions and live by them, while finding the balance between your material needs without sacrificing the happiness of others.
Social acceptance is a key part of having happiness in life. When we try to join a group, be it a group of athletes or a group of students at school or other groups out side your job or school, we usually try to make friends or connections to these people and usually some connections are established and friends are made as time goes on and the connections grow. It has also been proven that when people come together in close groups they are become more relaxed, less stressed and find their flow in life. Their flow being a continues balance of passion, happiness, meaning. In the movie Happy, an interview took place with a woman in Denmark that live in a co-housing community building. This co-housing community housed 20 families that were all very close and ever one knew that they could trust each other. The woman said that it made her life much more happy and relaxed because the work load was balanced between everyone and that she didn`t have to worry what meals she needed to cook for dinner each night. In my eye, most of this came from living in a community where she was accepted. She also said that she couldn`t imagine living alone in a apartment and being so disconnected and alone from anyone. But being disconnected is not always a bad thing that keeps you unhappy. I am a prime example of this. I have lived in a rural areas for the majority of my life and have been mostly content with my life but not overly happy.
Many athletes have experienced what is called the “zone,” and know that it is when there is perfect flow, not too challenged while not to easy, and is time when that athlete pushes the limit of his or her ability and can be a way to find meaning and happiness. It is a know fact, as stated by the University of Texas at Austin in the article Dopamine - A Sample Neurotransmitter “Dopamine affects brain processes that control movement, emotional response, and ability to experience pleasure and pain.” Exercising and getting into the “zone” releases dopamine into your brain. So when athletes get into the ”zone” and release dopamine they are able to experience pleasure. As an athlete I have experienced the “zone”. I have found that these experiences are very rare and is hard for me to reach. When an athlete is in the “zone” he or she doesn`t noticed or at least I don't, its only afterwords that he or she notices and realizes that what they were experiencing was dopamine being released into their brain. And when released into the brain it creates the feeling of happiness much like a drug, the longer time in the “zone” the more dopamine which equals longer happiness. Some people even find happiness and meaning in there life by getting into the “zone”.
By discovering our passions in life while be connected socially to people we can began to find happiness and meaning in life. People, in most cases, are only happy when there is some form of work or passion that drives them, which is why people that have there basic needs meet and a job that they enjoy or are passionate about are much happier that people with more then there basic needs made and live in comfort. But what does this have to do with happiness? Well yet me explain. There was an interview in the movie Happy, with a man who lived in a far off country and work as a cart taxi. He said that he was happy even through he didn`t have a lot of money or a big house, but he did he have what he needed. A roof over his head, food and his loving family. There was also a interview with Tom Shadyac in the movie I Am who became a millionaire in a short period of time. He stated that when he had all that money he though that he would be happier but when he had everything he wasn't as happy. This just goes to show that having a 17,000 square foot house and 10 cars will make you happy as our society likes to glamorize as the only way to be happy, but that having a loving family and having a roof over your head even if its plastic will make you just as happy.
But at what cost do we find happiness without sacrificing the happiness of others for our own needs and desires? I think this is a question that everyone should think about at one point in there life. At what point do you turn around and stop sacrificing the life and passion of other people for your happiness and martial needs? For most, they don`t think about how their actions affect others and will continue to ignore, whether from shortfall of information or lack of caring. But some do have the knowledge and are willing to walk away from the sacrificing of others and search for a way to find happiness that doesn`t affect others in a negative way. There is a short story called “The ones that walk away from Omaela” which was about the town of Omaela, a perfect town where everyone is happy and is living a good life with a good job and life style, much like Brave New World but at the expense of one child. This one child is kept in a small basement forced to live its entire life in the dark and alone, starving. The reason its kept in this situation is because for some reason, if released and shown kindness the rest of the town would fade into a ruined mess. And they justify it by saying that even if they released the child and showed kindness that it would be point less because it wouldn`t mater because the child had nothing to compare it to. I know that this is a fictional story but it does have many ties to our society. For starters were would we be if we didn`t have people in far off countries to make us cheap cloths, they don`t want live there life working a low or no paying job, but someone has too. So this brings me back to my original question. At what point do you turn around and stop sacrificing the life and passion of other people for your happiness?
If we teach and learn about happiness as a society would have less crime and poverty and we would be happier. I know that if I find passion, meaning and flow I would happier. If we are happy we can find our passion and meaning in life. When we have a passion and meaning when presented with a challenge we take a optimistic approach and perspective on the issue. If we learn about passion and flow we can teach to find there own flow and passion in life so that they can over come there challenges with a optimistic approach.

Happiness and meaning has been the topic for the past week and I can only assume that I learned about it for two reasons. One to helping me understand happiness and meaning in my life as well as how others experience happiness I there life and two, too advise someone on how to find happiness in there life. And sense I don`t want to talk about my happiness I will start by telling you about how I would advise someone. To began I would review the week of studying that happened during the creation of my essay and how each paragraph focused on a different part of happiness, for example how getting into the “zone” can make you happy or how having a community to live in can also make you happy. But that can only do so much, I can`t just tell them how to be happy or how to find happiness in there life, I however can tell them to use the information that I explained earlier to judge if there happy and how to find some way to be happy.
Thinking over what I have learned and how I will incorporate it into my life as made me think about how I will incorporate happiness into my summer. My plan for incorporating happiness and meaning into my summer is going to involve two parts of what I learned. To start I will plan to spend as much time ether riding my bike or getting outside into nature as much as humanly possible while keep trying to find a community that I can find friends to talk to or hang out with during my off time. Unfortunately I can`t plan out my entire summer day by day but I can plan to try to make my days much happier and enjoyable by planing rides or meeting friends to do something. Not just siting alone at home on the couch.
After reading the article, Why People Who Use Their Phone Too Much Can Become Unhappy, I considered how much time I spent on social media web sights and games on my phone. I realized that I am spending most of my off time on a computer or phone and not even considering going outside. I found this very surprising and enlightening to how I spend my time. I didn`t realize that I has so drawn to my phone, but now this summer I plan to limit my use of my phone and spend my time doing something that I enjoy doing. I have also realized that by spending time on my phone has limited my imagination and kept me from engaging with my family.
This project has had the biggest impact on compared to the rest of the projects, not because the were uninteresting but because this one centered around something that I have always had the hardest time with, happiness. During the process of this project I learned a lot about my self and how I can be happy. This all accumulated into one question that I am still finishing up, are you happy? I still after all this research, studying and days of classes am still answering this question. Not because I don`t have all the information but because I am still sorting my past and trying to gauge how happy I am. I don`t feel that this is a bad thing and each day I come closer to on unwinding the truth about how happy i am.
